JJ Saffa As Chief Minister, What Value Will That Add To The New Direction From The YP Standpoint?

J.J. Saffa, the dynamic opposition SLPP Secretary-General is shown consoling Alfred Momoh, the Eldest Son of former APC President Joseph Saidu Momoh as Alfred wept bitter tears against the APC of Ernest Bai Koroma

If you don’t know the party faithful and grassroots loyalists, how can you connect the party to the government or connect the opportunities with the system to the forerunners of the cause?

To succeed in the New Direction, we need leaders of inspired idealism, leaders who are granted great visions, who cares for the party’s interest, its faithful, grassroots loyalists and strive to make the SLPP better and stronger; who can kindle the people with the fire from their own burning souls. The leader, for the time being, whoever he may be, is but an instrument, to be used until broken and then to be cast aside. If he is worth his salt, he will care no more when he is broken than a soldier cares when he is sent where he forfeits his life to win.

The appointment of JJ Saffa is not only suitable but, more so, very strategic and timely. There should be unfettered access and reliable intelligence between the party and the Presidency, and that has been the biggest error in our politics. The nexus between the party and the government can not be blindfolded or self-centered. If you don’t know the party faithful and grassroots loyalists, how can you connect the party to the government or connect the opportunities with the system to the forerunners of the cause? And if the President is going this way and you are going that way, how can you promote the agenda of the President you ought to serve as a chief adviser?

It is very important to be politically sensitive, loyal, and strategic when holding an office that mediates and connects politics to governance. Many worthwhile decisions are politically motivated, party-oriented, and must be taken on the platform of sustainability in governance. Take it from me; JJ understands this simple but technical fact. In the long run, the character is the decisive factor in the life of an individual, political party, and nations alike. JJ Saffa is not a magic bullet, but he demystifies the requisite character for the Chief Minister’s office: Loyalty, Trustworthiness, Grassroot engagement, Party & People Centeredness, Knowledge of what obtains within and without, Competence, Political conscientiousness, and focus.

Seemingly, there can not be an any better time for JJ’s appointment to the office of the CM than now, for we are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. Hence, there should be a political emergency at this existentially defining moment. Let’s work on bridging the political gap, heal wounds, build new bridges and urgently ensure redistribution of political power, with key attention to the actual faithful of the cause, who can cascade the opportunities within the government to the loyalists notwithstanding the opportunity cost of trading it for personal aggrandizement. Today, our tomorrow is for political mobilization as a party with such an aggressive opposition and just a year left to prepare for elections. Take it from me. Without such, our victory will be herculean. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. There is such a thing as being too late in this unfolding conundrum of politics and governance in Africa. This is no time for political insecurity or apathy, or complacency. This is a time for vigorous, strategic, radical, and professional alignment for critical and prompt actions to win elections.

The true test of the New Direction ideal is whether we’re able to recognize our failings and then rise together to meet the challenges of our time. Whether we allow ourselves to be shaped by events and history or whether we act to ape them.

Most times, people ask what’s the function of the CM.  We cannot ask that question in the absence of tangibles and deliverables of the said office. The cardinal responsibility of leadership is to identify the dominant contradiction at each point of the process and resolve a central line to address it. When you have a Chief Minister that has been a

government Minister and a national officer of the party, he will not only ensure efficiency in performance management of political appointees who are to remain focus on adding value to the party and delivering on our manifesto; win the hearts of the people; neutralize opposition, and score political goals, he’ll also get a reflection the ideals of the New Direction and make it real to the people!
