President pays tribute to service and sacrifice
His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio officially launched National Poppy Week 2025 during a ceremony held at State House in Freetown on October 21, honouring the men and women in uniform who have served Sierra Leone in war and peace.
Commemorating a legacy of courage
The President highlighted the significance of the week, which commemorates Sierra Leoneans who served in the First and Second World Wars, as well as those who fought during the country’s eleven-year civil conflict. He reminded attendees that 2025 marks 80 years since the end of World War II.
“The Poppy Day is observed in remembrance of those who lost their lives, including those who returned home with physical and emotional scars,” President Bio said. “Their courage reminds us of the cost of peace.”
Security forces praised for selfless service
The ceremony brought together members of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), the Sierra Leone Police, the National Fire Force, Sierra Leone Correctional Service, Sierra Leone Scouts Association, and the Sierra Leone Ex-Servicemen Association (SLESA). President Bio described the nation’s uniformed personnel as “an epitome of selflessness and love for country.”
He also acknowledged the Royal Commonwealth Ex-Services League in the United Kingdom for its continued support of Sierra Leone’s veterans.
Support for veterans and peacekeepers
President Bio encouraged members of SLESA to stay united and peaceful during the week-long observance. He also praised the National Remembrance Day Planning Committee for ensuring a meaningful and peaceful commemoration.
SLESA’s National President, Lt. Col. (Rtd.) Abu Bakarr S. Kamara reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to honouring the country’s war heroes and acknowledged Sierra Leone’s role in global peacekeeping efforts.
“I want to commend the dedication of our troops who continue to contribute to global peace through their participation in ECOMOG missions and United Nations peacekeeping operations in Sudan and other parts of the world,” he said.
The ceremony concluded with the symbolic decoration of President Bio with a red poppy flower by Maj. (Rtd.) Clarence Augustine Mac-Sesay, SLESA’s Public Relations Officer, marking the formal start of Poppy Week.
